Madeline Swart Hits Grand Slam in Split With Cleveland State
3/13/2021 8:25:00 PM | Softball
Game 1 - Mastodons 8, Vikings 5
The 'Dons picked up where they left off against Cleveland State in the third game of the series, as Shaina Eyre struck out four of the first six batters she faced. Eyre finished the contest with five strikeouts, taking the win to go to 2-2. Torrie Jenkins (1-2) took the loss.
In the bottom of the second, the highlight of the day came after the 'Dons loaded up the bases. Kennedy Steele singled through the left side, Camryn Mosher walked, then Lexi Smalarz reached on a fielder's choice to fill the bases. Swart stepped up and hit a two-out grand slam over the right field wall. This gave the Mastodons a lead they would never yield.
Cleveland State scored a pair in the top of the third, but Purdue Fort Wayne pushed their lead up to six with a four-run fourth inning. Swart scored again after Morganne Denney hit the long ball over the left center field wall, also scoring Olivia Stansbury while two outs were on the board. On the next pitch, Alise Hale got a homer of her own to push the 'Dons up 8-2.
The Vikings got a run in the fifth and two in the seventh, but the Mastodons' lead was enough to end it there.
Swart led the way with her four RBIs and two runs. Denny had two hits for three RBIs.
Game 2 - Vikings 10, Mastodons 7
In game two, both offenses rolled, but CSU's came earlier and harder. The Mastodons had three home runs, but Cleveland State's lead had built enough by that point.
The Mastodons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Denny took advantage of an error and Meagan Mullaney scored. Cleveland State built up a 9-1 lead after this point, scoring four in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.
In the fifth, Mullaney knocked the first home run of her career over the left field wall. After Stansbury doubled on the next at bat, Denny's single brought her in to score.
CSU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh before Purdue Fort Wayne scored four. Swart reached on an error, then Mullaney knocked another long ball, in almost the exact same spot as her first homer. After Hale drew a walk with two outs, Kyndell Ethridge brought her in with a two-run homer, again to left.
Mullaney finished with three hits and three RBIs.
Jadelyn Johnson (1-1) tossed 2.1 innings. McConnell threw 4.2 in relief. Hannah Griffin (3-2) picked up the win.
After splitting the Horizon League opening series 2-2, Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 3-5 while Cleveland State goes to 7-9. The Mastodons will head to preseason favorite UIC next for more Horizon League play on March 19-20 with doubleheaders both days, starting at 2 p.m. ET.
