Purdue Fort Wayne Drops a Pair at UIC

CHICAGO - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of games to Horizon League favorite UIC on Saturday, March 20 at Flames Field.
GAME 1 - UIC 9, Mastodons 1
Purdue Fort Wayne got a game-tying run in the top of the second inning, but UIC topped the 'Dons thanks to multiple-run innings in the third, fourth and sixth.
Rachel Everson doubled to knock in Morganne Denny after she got on with a single to right. Thanks to Alise Hale dropping a bunt, Denny was able to advance to scoring position.
UIC built its lead after a pair of doubles in innings three and six, while getting three RBI singles in the fourth and sixth. Samantha Ferguson had three hits and three RBIs on the day.
Shaina Eyre (2-3) threw 5.1 innings, striking out four Flames. Miranda Gomez threw a complete game for UIC to move to 3-3.
GAME 2 - UIC 11, Mastodons 3
Purdue Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but this lead would only hold until the second.
Madeline Swart scored after a hitting a single through the left side, stealing second, advancing to third after Meagan Mullaney grounded out, then Olivia Stansbury had a sacrifice fly to left.
UIC got multiple runs in each inning from the second to the fifth. The 'Dons found the scoring column again in the fourth inning when Everson singled to right field, scoring both Hale and Olivia Stansbury.
The Flames took the win after Maddie Spinks singled up the middle in the sixth.
Jadelyn Johnson (1-3) threw 4.2 innings with one strikeout. Christina Toniolo threw all six innings for UIC to improve to 4-3.
The Mastodons fall to 3-7, 2-4 Horizon League while UIC improves to 7-9, 4-2 Horizon. These two teams will meet again tomorrow for another doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. ET. Those games will be on ESPN+.
