Early Leads Not Enough for Mastodon Softball at UIC

GAME 1 - Mastodons 4, UIC 10
On the first at bat of the day, Madeline Swart knocked a home run over the center field wall. After Kyndell Ethridge and Morganne Denny got on base, Meagan Mullaney hit a long ball to left field to gave the 'Dons a 4-0 lead, just a half-inning into the contest.
UIC got the majority of its offensive production in the second inning, when the Flames put six runs on the board. Their inning was highlighted by a two-run homer to left by Emma Crowley.
The Flames extended their lead with a run in the fourth and three in the sixth.
No Mastodons struck out in the first game of the day.
Jadelyn Johnson (1-4) and Lauren McConnell threw 3.0 innings each. Miranda Gomez (4-3) threw all seven innings and got the win for UIC.
GAME 2 - Mastodons 3, UIC 8
Purdue Fort Wayne used a three-run first inning to get another early jump on UIC in the final game of the weekend.
Back-to-back hits from Swart and Ethridge to start the game set up for a scoring opportunity early. Denny drew a walk and loaded the bases for Alise Hale's at bat. Hale grounded out, but brought Swart home with the fielder's choice. Ethridge scored while Mullaney was still at the plate, taking advantage of a passed ball to get home. Mullaney kept the scoring going by doubling to center field to bring Denny home.
After going up 3-0, the Mastodons would nurse this lead until the bottom of the fifth, keeping UIC scoreless until they got two. The Flames used a single to right center to score both. Shaina Eyre got out of the inning with one of her five strikeouts.
UIC took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Maica Ingles knocked a triple to center field with the bases loaded. The Flames then scored three more in the sixth for a six-run inning. They loaded the bases again, but the Mastodons got out of the jam with Hale making the play at second base.
Christina Toniolo got the win for UIC to improve to 5-3. Eyre falls to 2-4 after a full game in the circle. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-9, 2-6 Horizon League. UIC jumps to 9-9, 6-2. The Mastodons will return home for two games on Tuesday, March 23 against Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies are 7-5, 6-2.
