Know Your Foe
Youngstown State is 11-7, 4-2 Horizon League heading into this weekend. The Penguins are riding a three-game winning streak after taking a pair of midweek games against Northern Kentucky and a game at Dayton last week. In their only four-game Horizon League series so far this season, the Penguins split with UIC. YSU is led by Grace Cea, who has 16 hits and 14 RBIs. The Penguins are paced in the circle by Maddi Lusk (5-2) and Elle Buffenbarger (4-3) who have 2.02 and 3.73 ERAs, respectively.
Familiar Faces in the Batting Order
Madeline Swart has been the leadoff hitter in all 12 games for Purdue Fort Wayne. She has the most games with multiple hits, with three games with two and one game with three. Morganne Denny has also batted cleanup in every game this season.
Goin' Yard
The Mastodons have 12 home runs this season, led by three from Meagan Mullaney. This averages to one per game. In their last full season (2019), the Mastodons only had 13 in 49 games. In 2020 in 24 games, the 'Dons had 14 home runs.
High-Powered Offense
The Mastodons have scored eight or more runs three times this season. The 'Dons are 3-0 in such games.
First Four
The Mastodons have seen the most success on the offensive side in the first and fourth innings. The 'Dons have scored 16 total runs in fourth innings and 13 in first innings.
A Grand Outing
In the Mastodons' third game against Cleveland State, Madeline Swart hit a grand slam against the Vikings. It was the third home run of her career, but the first with anyone on base.
Just One Hit
Jadelyn Johnson threw a one-hitter against Cleveland State on Friday, March 12, which the Mastodons won 11-1. She gave up the one hit (a single) on the penultimate at bat of the game after tossing five strikeouts. She became the first Mastodon to throw a one-hitter since Bailey Benefiel threw an eight-inning one-hitter against Nicholls State in 2018.
Last Time Out
The 'Dons dropped the four-game series at UIC last weekend.
Coming Up
The Mastodons will welcome fellow Horizon League newcomer Robert Morris to Fort Wayne on April 2 and 3 for four games. To this point, RMU is 10-8, 5-5 Horizon League.
