'Dons Drop Opening Doubleheader at Youngstown State
3/26/2021 9:36:00 PM | Softball
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of Horizon League contests at Youngstown State on Friday evening (March 26) 3-2 and 8-0.
Game 1 - Mastodons 2, Penguins 3
From the second at bat of the game until the third to last, Purdue Fort Wayne was ahead of the Penguins.
Meagan Mullaney knocked her fourth home run of the season on the second pitch she saw, sending it over the center field wall. Neither team would score again until the third, when Mullaney came up to the plate again. The freshman grounded out to the shortstop, but Lexi Smalarz scored on the play. This gave the Mastodons a 2-0 lead to work with.
The Penguins responded in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the Mastodon lead in half. The 'Dons held the lead heading into the final frame, but Youngstown State got two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Alex DeLeon got a single to right center with two outs to win in a walk off.
Shaina Eyre threw a complete game and struck out three, but fell to 2-5. YSU's Maddi Lusk took the win to improve to 6-2.
Game 2 - Mastodons 0, Penguins 8
In the nightcap, it was an eight-run second inning for Youngstown State that was the difference.
YSU's second inning featured two singles, a triple and home run.
From this point on, the Penguins got just enough from their defense to hold the 'Dons at bay. The Mastodons broke up the no-hitter bid in the fifth inning with hits from Kennedy Steele and Kyndell Ethridge. Ethridge's double advanced Steele to third, but they were kept there.
Jadelyn Johnson falls to 1-5. Youngstown State's Elle Buffenbarger struck out nine to get the win to improve to 5-3. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-11, 2-8 Horizon League. YSU jumps up to 13-7, 6-2. These two teams will meet again tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
