YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Purdue Fort Wayne softball took the series finale from Youngstown State 11-6 on Saturday, March 27 after dropping the third game 8-3.
Game 1, Mastodons 3, Penguins 8
Alise Hale opened up the scoring for the Mastodons, but only after Youngstown State had put two on the board. On the first pitch Hale saw on Saturday, she knocked it over the left field wall.
In the fourth, Rachel Everson tied it up with a single up the middle that scored Hale again after she drew a walk. This evened the game at two runs apiece.
YSU used a three-run fifth to retake the lead with three unearned runs.
In the sixth, the Mastodons added another run thanks to Everson's single down the left field line. This brought in Morganne Denny who reached after a single to right.
The Penguins put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to get to the final line of 8-3
Lauren McConnell tossed 5.1 innings from the circle, taking the loss to fall to 0-2 despite four K's. Elle Buffenbarger took the win for YSU and improved to 6-3.
Game 2, Mastodons 11, Penguins 6
The 'Dons led wire-to-wire in the nightcap, from the fourth pitch of the game to the last. Kyndell Ethridge hit a solo home run from the leadoff spot to give the Mastodons an early lead.
Purdue Fort Wayne got three runs in the third thanks to three singles. Meagan Mullaney scored on a passed ball, then Hale and Denny were brought in on singles from Everson and Emma McMillan.
YSU got three in bottom of the third frame, but the 'Dons still led 4-3.
In the following inning, the 'Dons got a crooked number on the scoreboard with five runs. It all started when Mullaney struck out but reached first on a passed ball.
