Robert Morris is 13-9 and 8-6 in the Horizon League, having split or won three of their four League series thus far. The Colonials are riding a three-game winning streak after taking the final three games from Oakland. RMU is led by Natalie Higgins on offense; she has 28 RBIs, a .417 batting average with 30 hits, and 10 extra base hits, including four home runs. She leads the team in all of those categories. In the circle, Dana Vatakis is 5-4, Madison Riggle is 4-2 and Rachael Rhinehart is 3-2. Each of those pitchers has an ERA between 3.00 and 4.00.
The Series
The Mastodons and Colonials have ever met four times, with just one meeting in the last decade. The last meeting came in 2018 in Miami, Ohio, which featured a few Mastodons that are still on the roster. Lexi Smalarz and Morganne Denny led the 'Dons to a 10-1 win with three and two RBIs, respectively. Aside from that contest, the two squads have only met in Kissimmee, Florida at the Rebel Spring Games in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The series is split evenly at 2-2.
Goin' Yard
The Mastodons have 16 home runs this season, led by four from Meagan Mullaney. Mullnaey's four ranks fifth in the Horizon League while the team's 16 home runs is second in the Horizon League, behind just Cleveland State with 19. This averages to one per game, which leads the League on a per-game basis. In their last full season (2019), the Mastodons only had 13 in 49 games. In 2020 in 24 games, the 'Dons had 14 home runs.
High-Powered Offense
The Mastodons have scored eight or more runs four times this season. The 'Dons are 4-0 in such games.
First Four
The Mastodons have seen the most success on offense in the first and fourth innings. The 'Dons have scored 22 total runs in fourth innings and 15 in first innings.
A Grand Outing
In the Mastodons' third game against Cleveland State, Madeline Swart hit a grand slam against the Vikings. It was the third home run of her career, but the first with anyone on base.
Just One Hit
Jadelyn Johnson threw a one-hitter against Cleveland State on Friday, March 12, which the Mastodons won 11-1. She gave up the one hit (a single) on the penultimate at bat of the game after tossing five strikeouts. She became the first Mastodon to throw a one-hitter since Bailey Benefiel threw an eight-inning one-hitter against Nicholls State in 2018.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne took the series finale from Horizon League-leading Youngstown State last weekend. The Mastodons' offense put up 11 runs on the board and featured two home runs: one from Kyndell Ethridge in the first inning and one from Olivia Stansbury in the sixth.
Coming Up
The Mastodons will have a doubleheader with Green Bay on Tuesday, April 6. The first game will start at 1 p.m. ET.
