Game 1, Mastodons 3, Colonials 5
The Colonials never trailed in game one, using a two-run first inning that saw them score on a fielder's choice and and an error. Purdue Fort Wayne tied the game after scoring a run in the second on a solo home run from Kyndell Ethridge, then another in the third when Meagan Mullaney singled up the middle to bring Rachel Everson home.
RMU got two runs in the fifth: a solo shot on the first at bat and a single that scored an unearned run. The Colonials tallied another in the following frame, which came on another single RBI.
In the bottom of the seventh, Everson got on with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, then was brought home by Madeline Swart's single to right field. With the tying run at the plate, however, RMU pitcher Rachael Rhinehart got one of her five strikeouts to stifle the chance of a walk off win.
Eyre threw all seven innings and finished with seven strikeouts, which tied her career-best. She was credited with the loss to fall to 3-6. Rhinehart got the win to move to 4-2.
Game 2, Mastodons 9, Colonials 10
The rematch featured a furious comeback attempt from Purdue Fort Wayne, with six runs in the last two innings of play.
In the sixth, Camryn Mosher doubled to right center to score Everson and Morganne Denny. After RMU got a two-run homer in the seventh, the 'Dons countered with a three-run bomb of their own from Denny. This shot over the right field wall scored Alise Hale and Kennedy Steele. On the subsequent at bat, Everson knocked a home run to cut the RMU lead to just one at 10-9. Mullaney drew a walk after Mosher singled, putting the winning run at first. Swart struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch to load the bases, but the Colonials got out of the jam on a fielder's choice at third.
The Mastodons had the lead for three innings, however, as they scored two in the first and one in the third. In the first, Olivia Stansbury singled up the middle to score Swart and Hale double to score Stansbury. In the third, Kennedy Steele scored on a throwing error from first that was trying to catch her out at third base.
The Colonials cut into the Mastodon lead and built their own in the fourth, putting four up on the scoreboard thanks to a two-run homer, a sacrifice fly and an error. The fifth and sixth saw two Colonials cross home plate in each, both a double through the left side.
McConnell (0-3) recorded her career-high seven strikeouts in just four innings of work. Jadelyn Johnson came in to strike out two in relief. RMU's Dana Vatakis (6-4) got the win and Rhinehart got her first save of the season.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-14, 3-11 Horizon League while the Colonials improve to 15-9, 10-6. These two teams will meet again tomorrow at the Purdue Fort Wayne softball field for another doubleheader starting at noon.
