Purdue Fort Wayne Heads to League-Favorite UIC This Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Horizon League's preseason favorite UIC will welcome the Purdue Fort Wayne softball team this weekend for a four-game series.

Know Your Foe
UIC was selected as the top team in the Horizon League Preseason Poll and is 5-9 in the early going of 2021. The Flames split the opening week of League play with Youngstown State, with 5-2 and 2-1 losses and 4-0 and 2-1 wins. Kayla Wedl leads UIC with 19 hits, a .413 batting average, 13 RBIs, a triple and five home runs. She is leading the team in all those categories. Christina Toniolo is 3-3 in the circle with a 4.93 ERA, with Miranda Gomez at 2-3 with 3.60 ERA. Toniolo has 22 strikeouts which leads the team.
Through One Week
In the first week of Horizon League action, no team went 4-0, with only one team going 3-1 and one 1-3. All the rest of the teams in the League split their opening series 2-2.
A Grand Outing
In the Mastodons' third game against Cleveland State, Madeline Swart hit a grand slam against the Vikings. It was the third home run of her career, but the first with anyone on base.
Just One Hit
Jadelyn Johnson threw a one-hitter against Cleveland State on Friday, March 12, which the Mastodons won 11-1. She gave up the one hit (a single) on the penultimate at bat of the game after tossing five strikeouts. She became the first Mastodon to throw a one-hitter since Bailey Benefiel threw an eight-inning one-hitter against Nicholls State in 2018.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne split its Horizon League opening series 2-2, taking games two and three from Cleveland State. Jadelyn Johnson threw a one-hitter against the Vikings in game two and Madeline Swart hit a grand slam in game three.
Coming Up
The Mastodons return home for a midweek doubleheader with Oakland on Tuesday, March 23. First pitch for the first game will be at 2 p.m. at the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field.
