Cross Country Heads to IUPUI for 2021 Horizon League Cross Country Championships

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne cross country program will compete for the first time at the Northview Church Course for the 2021 Horizon League Cross Country Championships hosted by IUPUI on Thursday (March 4). The women's 6K race will begin at 2:15 p.m. ET and the men's 8K will be at 3:15 p.m. ET.

So.....Long Time, No See
It has been 475 days since the cross country programs have competed. The 'Dons were supposed to compete at the Jaguar Invitational at IUPUI on February 5th, but the meet was canceled due to weather concerns. The women's roster is made up of nine freshmen and seven sophomores, while the men's team consists of seven freshmen and eight sophomores.
Who Should I Look Out For?
Each team is only allowed to have seven individuals compete per gender. The Mastodons will send Camden Abernathy, Nathan Mills, Nicholas Mills, Kehinde Oladapo, Oneel Occenat, Husam Saleh and Andrew Whitinger for the men. Paige Benecke, Mallory Clements, Madison King, Kathy Potter, Kiannah Sarver, Angelina Sedlaczek and Gianna Stanich will run for the women. Purdue Fort Wayne will have 11 freshmen and three sophomores compete.
Back in 2019....
Last year at the 2019 Summit League Cross Country Championships Presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, the men's team finished in fifth place with 142 points and the women's concluded the event in seventh place with 209 points. Sammy Moran led the way for the men's 8K in 24th place with a time of 26:16.9. Kathy Potter finished the women's 6K in 37th place with a personal-best time of 23:31.3.
Preparing for the HL Championships
Several Mastodons running at the Cross Country Championships ran last weekend (February 26 - March 1) at the 2021 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships. Freshman Madison King earned a spot on the podium with a second place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:06.76. King also competed in the 5000 meter run and recorded a time of 17:42.00 (5th). Andrew Whitinger led the way in the men's 3000 meter run with a time of 8:54.46 and concluded the race in 11th place. Nathan Mills competed in his first conference meet in the 5000 meter run and had a time of 15:35.47, earning himself 17th place.
