Softball Returns: Mastodons Head to Evansville to Open 2021

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team will open the 2021 season on Saturday (March 6) when the Mastodons travel to Evansville for four games.

Know Your Foe
Evansville has already played 10 games this season, going 6-4 so far. The Purple Aces are coming off a pair of wins to Division I newcomer Bellarmine. Last weekend, UE split a four-game series with Green Bay. Eryn Gould has nine RBIs, eight hits and eight runs, leading the team in all those categories. Jaime Nurrenbern and Izzy Vetter both have 2-0 records in the circle. Nurrenbern has a 0.45 ERA with nine strikeouts, while Vetter has a 2.49 ERA and 23 strikeouts.
Welcoming the Newcomers
The Mastodons have five newcomers on the 2021 roster: Meagan Mullaney, Alyson Quinlan, Alyson Wiesehan, Kennedy Steele and Jadelyn Johnson. Mullaney, Quinlan and Wiesehan are true freshmen, while Steele (Lansing CC) and Johnson (South Dakota State) come to the Summit City after two seasons at their respective schools.
Horizon League Preview
Purdue Fort Wayne will compete in its first season in the Horizon League in the 2021 season. The 'Dons were picked ninth in the preseason poll, but ranked seventh in the RPI at the end of last season. They will open 2021 with Cleveland State in Fort Wayne on March 12-13. Last season, the 'Dons played Wright State (before the program was cut) and Northern Kentucky in nonconference tournaments, and had UIC and Green Bay scheduled for after the season was canceled. The 'Dons have played all Horizon League schools at least once and hold all-time winning records against Detroit Mercy (12-11), IUPUI (26-20), Oakland (14-12) and Youngstown State (2-1).

The Mastodons were in the Summit League from 2008-20. They had four head coaches in that time: Keith Fisher, Amy Tudor, John Bassett and Germaine Fairchild. The 'Dons finished second in the League regular season three times (2010, 2012 and 2014) and won the League tournament in 2013, earning a berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne last took the field on March 11, 2020 at the Billiken Spring Tournament. The season was canceled while the team was on the road. The Mastodons had not played a home game yet in 2020.
