Mastodon Softball Drops a Pair at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball dropped a pair of games on Saturday (March 6) in their 2021 season openers at Evansville.
GAME 1
Rachel Everson knocked in the first home run of her career in the opener, knocking a long ball over the right field wall in the third inning.
Evansville's bats came alive in the bottom of the third with a pair of doubles that knocked in an RBI each. In the fifth, Jenna Lis hit a home run of her own out to left field. Katie McLean knocked in the final run of the day.
Meagan Mullaney got on base in the fourth with a single up the right side, but the Purple Aces stranded her on base. Kyndell Ethridge singled to center field in the seventh to try to extend the game, but the Purple Aces did the same to her as the game came to a close.
Evansville's Izzy Vetter threw all seven innings in the circle, ending her game with 11 strikeouts. Shaina Eyre (0-1) pitched four innings for the 'Dons, striking out three Purple Aces.
GAME 2
Evansville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Marah Wood knocked in two RBIs with a single to center field. Wood then scored on her own, as she was brought in off a fly ball to left field. A fourth Purple Ace run would score in the second inning.
The Mastodons got on the board in the third when Alise Hale reached on an error that also scored Mullaney and Madeline Swart.
In the following frame, the 'Dons cut the lead to one when Lexi Smalarz drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Olivia Stansbury. Stansbury got put in scoring position after a double to right field and then advancing on a wild pitch.
Evansville stretched its lead back out in the bottom of the fourth when Wood belted a grand slam. Wood finished the game with six RBIs.
Lauren McConnell (0-1) and Jadelyn Johnson split the majority of the pitching load. Johnson struck out four Purple Aces in her Mastodon debut.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-2 on the young season. Evansville improves to 8-4. These two teams will meet again tomorrow on Sunday, March 6 for another doubleheader starting at noon ET.
