EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball picked up its first win of the season on Sunday (March 7), when the Mastodons split with Evansville in a doubleheader. The 'Dons fell 4-1 in game one and won 8-7 in game two.
GAME 1
Madeline Swart and Meagan Mullaney picked up hits in game three against the Purple Aces. They batted in the No. 1 and 2 spots. Mullaney had an RBI, which came in the seventh inning on a single to center field. She pushed Ashley Haas home after Haas got on by drawing a walk.
Purdue Fort Wayne got two 'Dons in scoring position in the second and third innings, but Evansville held them at second base. Swart got on base in the fifth with a single up the right side.
The Purple Aces did their damage with two home runs from Marah Wood, one in the first inning that scored two and a solo in the third. Evansville extended its lead in the third with a single to left field that brough in Jessica Fehr.
Jadelyn Johnson (0-1) threw 5.2 innings in the circle, picking up five strikeouts and three scoreless innings. Emma McMillan came in relief to strike out one.
GAME 2
Olivia Stansbury led Purdue Fort Wayne to their first win of the year with three RBIs. She got two of them in the third inning, which was when the Mastodons got the lead they would not give up.
After Lexi Smalarz was walked, Swart singled into left field to put her in scoring position. Mullaney reached on a fielder's choice to advance Smalarz to third, the Smalarz took advantage of an error by the Purple Aces to score. Mullaney scored after stealing second then scoring on an error. Morganne Denny reached on an error in center field, leaving two Mastodons on for Stansbury to come to the plate. Stansbury had a single to the same spot, scoring both Denny and Alise Hale. This gave the Mastodons a 4-0 advantage through three innings.
Offense was quiet through the fourth and fifth, until Stansbury came up to bat again in the sixth, when she knocked a home run over the center field wall.
In the seventh, things got interesting, as the Mastodons ballooned their lead to six when Hale singled to center field, scoring Smalarz. Swart scored on a passed ball, then Denny knocked in Hale on a single to right field.
This gave the Mastodons an 8-2 lead, which they would end up needing every bit of.
Evansville got five runs in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run on first base. Smalarz converted the out from third base to send the Purple Aces off with a loss.
Shaina Eyre (1-1) picked up the win, Lauren McConnell got her first save of the year, and UE's Jamie Nurrenbern (4-1) took the loss.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 1-3, while Evansville goes to 9-5. This was the only non-League series for Purdue Fort Wayne, as the Mastodons will open Horizon League play on March 12 with a doubleheader with Cleveland State in Fort Wayne.
