Know Your Foe
Northern Kentucky is 7-19, 6-12 Horizon League, but has not played since April 3. The Norse had a midweek doubleheader with Robert Morris and a weekend series with Detroit Mercy canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Prior to that shutdown, the Norse lost four in a row at UIC. NKU did have three wins against Cleveland State the week before, however. Ana Lawson leads Northern Kentucky with 22 RBIs and seven home runs on the season. She holds a .308 batting average and 24 hits, the latter of which ties for the team lead with Ella LeMonier. Faith Howard has the best ERA on the team at 2.36, but is 0-3. Lauryn Hicks holds a 5-9 record in 15 appearances in the circle with a 3.86 ERA.
The Series
The Mastodons and Norse have met 26 times since 1991. Most of these games came in the Division II eras of the programs. Since the two teams moved Division I, there have been five games, of which the Mastodons have taken three. NKU took the most recent contest in the 2020 season 6-2. Rachel Everson had an RBI and a run in that game.
Taking Names and Series Finales
The Mastodons have taken the final game of three series this season: Evansville (8-7), Youngstown State (11-6) and Robert Morris (9-5).
Goin' Yard
The Mastodons have 27 home runs this season, which leads the Horizon League, even despite playing fewer games than seven of the nine other League teams. In Horizon League play only, the 'Dons have eight more home runs than the next closest team. Freshman Meagan Mullaney leads the team with five, while Kyndell Ethridge, Morganne Denny, Olivia Stansbury and Alise Hale all have four each. The Mastodons' 27 home runs are the team's most in a season since 2014, when the 'Dons had 43.
High-Powered Offense
The Mastodons have scored eight or more runs seven times this season. The 'Dons are 6-1 in such games.
Save a Spot at the Table
Lauren McConnell is one of only two players in the Horizon League with two saves on their résumé this season. The other is Youngstown State's Maddi Lusk.
A Grand Outing
In the Mastodons' third game against Cleveland State, Madeline Swart hit a grand slam against the Vikings. It was the third home run of her career, but the first with anyone on base.
A Pair of One-Hitters
Jadelyn Johnson threw a one-hitter against Cleveland State on Friday, March 12, which the Mastodons won 11-1. She gave up the one hit (a single) on the penultimate at bat of the game after tossing five strikeouts. She became the first Mastodon to throw a one-hitter since Bailey Benefiel threw an eight-inning one-hitter against Nicholls State in 2018. Lauren McConnell threw a one-hitter against IUPUI on April 9 in the 'Dons' 8-0 win. The only hit McConnell gave up was a single in the fifth inning.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons took one of the three games played against IUPUI last weekend. The 'Dons got an 8-0 win in the opener, but dropped the final two games 8-2 and 7-4.
Coming Up
The 'Dons have a rescheduled midweek doubleheader against Oakland on Tuesday, April 20 with a 2 p.m. scheduled start time at the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field.
