HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - After splitting with the Norse on Friday, the Purdue Fort Wayne softball team picked up another Horizon League win against Northern Kentucky on Saturday (April 17) thanks to stout pitching from Jadelyn Johnson.
Game 1 - Mastodons 2, Norse 3
Shaina Eyre threw a complete game in the first game allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. She struck out two, but fell to 5-11. She kept NKU off the scoreboard for the first four innings of play, allowing just three baserunners in the process.
The 'Dons jumped out to a lead in the third inning when Ashley Haas scored on a sacrifice fly from Olivia Stansbury. Purdue Fort Wayne doubled its early lead in the fifth when Lexi Smalarz stole second, drawing a Northern Kentucky misfire on the throw, allowing Ashley Haas to score from third.
NKU got just enough done in the fifth and sixth innings to take the win. Three singles in the fifth scored two runs and two singles in the sixth brought home one.
In the 'Dons' last at bat, Haas drew a walk, but was stranded at first.
NKU's Faith Howard took the win to improve to 2-3.
Game 2 - Mastodons 3, Norse 1
Johnson had a five-strikeout performance to lead Purdue Fort Wayne to a win in their afternoon game with the Norse. She threw a complete game with just one earned run and got the win to jump to 2-5.
It took to the third inning for either team to score, and it was the Mastodons that struck first. Haas homered in her first at bat of the game, knocking the long ball to left field after a seven-pitch plate appearance. The 'Dons doubled up quickly when Madeline Swart scored on a throwing error after Stansbury singled through the left side. This gave the Mastodons a 2-0 lead at the halfway mark.
The Norse got their only run of the game in the fourth inning, which came on a solo home run down the left field line.
In the sixth, the Mastodons put any doubt away when Kennedy Steele singled out to left field to score Stansbury. Johnson forced NKU to go three-up, three-down in the sixth, then stranded two in the seventh. All told, the Norse left five baserunners on.
After the split, Purdue Fort Wayne sits at 8-21, 7-18 Horizon while Northern Kentucky goes to 9-21, 8-14. The Mastodons are back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Oakland to the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field. This midweek doubleheader is rescheduled from March 23, which was postponed due to weather.
