‘Dons Use Walk-Off Walk to Top Norse in Game Two
4/3/2021 7:54:00 PM | Baseball
Game One – Norse 11, Mastodons 10 (scheduled seven inning game)
The 'Dons found themselves down 6-0 after an inning and a half but were quickly back in it after a four-spot in the bottom of the second. Aaron Chapman had a two-RBI single in the inning while Garett Lake and Alex Evenson each knocked in a run in the inning.
It was an 11-5 score entering the bottom of the sixth when the 'Dons scored five runs. Ryan Robison had his first three-run home run on the day to get the scoring started. Dylan Stewart and Zac Baden each added an RBI double. Baden was stranded at second to end the sixth as the tying run. It would be the Mastodons' final best chance to tie the game after a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Chapman, Lake and Baden each had two hits in the game. Ryan Mollette and Chapman each scored twice for the 'Dons.
Noah Fisher hit a home run for NKU. Kyle Klingenbeck picked up the win for NKU. He is 3-2. Tyler Ollier earned his third save of the season.
Justin Miller suffered the loss. He is 3-3. Austin Holt tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Game Two – Mastodons 9, Norse 8
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair. It started with a three-run home run by Ryan Robison in the first. However, by the end of the second inning it was a 6-4 Northern Kentucky lead. The 'Dons took the lead back at 7-6 with a three-spot in the fourth inning. Chapman and Lake each had an RBI single in the fourth.
It was an 8-7 Mastodon lead entering the ninth but the Norse tied it with one run. It could have been worse, however, as NKU put runners at second and third with one out. Evenson was able to keep the damage to just the one run. It opened the door for the 'Dons to load the bases with no outs in the ninth. That is when Evan Huffman worked a walk to score Mollette and give a win to the 'Dons.
Jack Lang finished with three hits in game two, including an eighth inning RBI that put the 'Dons up 8-7. Dylan Stewart totaled three this and two runs scored with a triple.
Billy Marion and Josh Romans had doubles for NKU, their only extra base hits of the game.
Evenson threw the final 3.0 innings to get the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. He is 1-0. Tyler Ollier suffered the loss. He is 0-2.
The Mastodons improve to 9-14 (6-10 Horizon League). The Norse fall to 10-13 (8-8 Horizon League).
Purdue Fort Wayne is at first place Wright State next week for four games.
