Hudson-Turpin Third in Two Events to Help 'Dons on Day Two

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The second day of the 2021 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Youngstown State concluded with freshman Jesseca Hudson-Turpin earning a spot on podium in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles. The Purdue Fort Wayne women's track and field team earned eight top 10 finishes and two qualifying individuals.
Hudson-Turpin recorded a time of 14.50 in the 100 meter hurdles, placing third overall and getting on the podium. Dylan Kirkwood claimed the seventh place spot with a time of 14.62.
Hudson-Turpin also clinched third place in the 400 meter hurdles and clocked in at 1:04.44.
Freshman Maya Preece qualified for the 400 meter dash finals and placed third in prelims with a time of 58.26 while Katie Clark finished in 10th (1:00.97) and Mackenzie Lanning came in 17th (1:04.28). The second qualifier for the 'Dons was Makaila Groves in the 800 meter run. Groves recorded a time of 2:18.76 and came in eighth. Gianna Stanich was close behind in 10th place with a time of 2:20.25. Brayden Langdon came in 16th (2:23.95) and Lauren Morales was 24th (2:26.40).
In the final day for the heptathlon, Kirkwood finished in fourth place with 4,519 points. Sophia Buck placed eighth with 3,620 points and Ramey Wilder rounded out the Mastodons in 11th with 3.256 points.
The women's 4x100 meter relay squad, made up of Payton McHenry, Rachel Pierre-Louis, Clark and Jai Reed, recorded a time of 49.94, earning eighth place.
Haley Pandazis represented Purdue Fort Wayne in the 100 meter dash and finished in 20th with a time of 12.90. Pandazis also claimed the 19th spot in the 200 meter dash and clocked in at 26.97. Lanning placed 21st and had a time of 27.41.
In the long jump, Reed reached a mark of 5.23m, putting her in 13th. McHenry had a mark of 5.15m and claimed 15th place. Abbigail Garwood threw to a mark of 11.54m in the shot put, earning 13th. Maddi Hardin finished in 20th with a mark of 10.19m. Hardin also threw a mark of 34.04m in the hammer throw and ended the event in 17th.
As a team, the Mastodons are tied with Northern Kentucky for fifth place with 25 points.
The third and final day of competition with begin on Sunday (May 9) at 9 a.m. with the men's high jump. Events have been moved indoors due to weather concerns. Tomorrow's indoor portion of the championship will be contested without fans as directed by the Horizon League Board of Directors on all indoor competition this year.
