FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team travels to Iowa City, Iowa for a non-league match against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday, Sept. 2 (7 p.m.).

Scouting The Mastodons
The Mastodons are on a four game unbeaten streak. Its record of 1-0-3 is good for second in the Horizon League, behind Milwaukee. The 'Dons are coming off a 1-1 tie against Bellarmine on Sunday, Aug. 29. In Sunday's game, freshman forward Gigi Ricciardi scored her first goal of her Mastodon career. Kayla Shebar was credited with the assist, it was her first assist of her Mastodon career. Ricciardi is one of four Mastodons to score a goal this year, the others are Morgan Reitano, Mackenzie Evans, and Megan Sinnott.
Samantha Castaneda is the defending Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week. This past weekend, Castaneda played 220 minutes in net. She racked up six saves, allowed one goal on the weekend, and earned a shutout against Eastern Illinois. She is ranked first in the NCAA in minutes played (410:52). The Fort Wayne native also ranks 14th in the NCAA and first in the Horizon League in shutouts (two). In addition, she is second in the Horizon League save percentage (.900), second in lowest goals against average (0.44) and third in total saves (18, 4.50 saves per game). On the offensive side, Kelsey Gallagher is tied for fourth in assists (two).
One of the key reasons for the Mastodons' success so far is the impact of the freshman class. Student-athletes such as Ricciardi, Shebar, Marisa Metzger and Bella Reitano have all played significant minutes to start the season.
Scouting The Hawkeyes
Iowa is coming off a 7-9-1 season where they won the Big Ten Tournament Championship and defeated Campbell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes started last season with a 0-6-1 record, and finished the season with a 7-3 record, including a 1-0 over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game.
The Hawkeyes are off to a 3-1 start to the season with wins over DePaul, Iowa State, and St. Louis. In its four games this year, the Hawkeyes have scored four first half goals. The Hawkeyes lead goal scorer is Kenzie Roling with two goals on the season. She is first on the team in shots on goal (five) and third in shots (eight). Hailey Rydberg leads the Hawkeyes in assists with three. Monica Wilhelm has started four games in net for Iowa. She's accumulated 10 saves, allowed three goals, has a .769 save percentage and a 0.74 goals allowed average.
David Dilanni enters his eighth year as the Iowa head coach. He has amassed a 71-58-9 record at Iowa and an overall record of 292-76-27 record overall.
