Four 'Dons Post Double-Doubles in Five-Set Loss at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Despite four players recording double-doubles, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its third five-set match in five days. The Mastodons fell to Oakland 3-2 (27-25, 22-25, 16-25, 25-13, 15-13) on Tuesday (Sept. 28) in the Athletics Center O'Rena.
The Mastodons have played 19 sets of volleyball over the last five days, with just one of the four matches not going to a decisive fifth game.
Rachael Crucis notched her first double-double of the season with 18 digs and 11 assists. Madison Gates had 38 assists and a career-high 25 digs. Katie Crowe and Maggie Castleman both got double-doubles from the outside, with 18 kills and 19 digs for Crowe and 18 kills and 11 digs for Castleman.
Purdue Fort Wayne used a pair of 5-0 runs to build a small lead in the first set, then reached a set point opportunity after a kill from Crowe. The Mastodons had a 24-22 advantage, but Oakland scored five of the last six points and ultimately took the set. Crowe had seven of her 18 kills in the opening frame.
In the second set, the 'Dons hit .313 to take advantage of the Golden Grizzlies, who hit .179. Late in the set, Crowe slammed down a kill, then Madelyn Wurster and Leigha Baldwin combined for a block to force a Golden Grizzlies timeout. Alexandra Traciak dropped in a timely ace on set point to even the score at one set each.
After the break, the Purdue Fort Wayne offense continued, as the team hit . 353 while keeping Oakland at .070. The Mastodons were without a service error in the third set, with a pair of aces. Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to a 7-0 lead under Baldwin's service. This run started with two blocks from Ramei Jackson, one with Castleman and one with Wurster. Wurster got an ace to extend the lead to 10-1 and force OU to burn its second timeout of the set. This lead was enough to nurse for the rest of the set. Baldwin, in her first-career start, blocked a ball with Wurster, then forced an attack error to give the Mastodons a 2-1 edge.
Oakland dominated the fourth set, forcing the Mastodons to hit negative thanks to three blocks.
In the fifth, Oakland built up a 12-7 lead. The 'Dons cut it to 12-11 after Jackson blocked an attack, but the Golden Grizzlies traded points the rest of the way and ended the match on a block.
All told, Oakland out-hit the Mastodons .162-.161, despite the 'Dons hitting over .300 in two sets. The Mastodons finished the match with 95 digs, the most in a match since the 2018 season.
The Mastodons fall to 2-15, 0-4 Horizon League while Oakland improves to 9-5, 3-0 Horizon League. Purdue Fort Wayne has another two matches this weekend, with the 'Dons continuing its stretch of 9-of-10 on the road. The Mastodons will visit Robert Morris (Oct. 1) and Youngstown State (Oct. 2).
