Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Opens Season This Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team opens its season with five games at two different tournaments this weekend in Alabama.

Welcome Back Coach Bowman!
Amber Bowman is in her first season at the helm for the Mastodons, taking over for Germaine Fairchild who served as head coach for seven seasons. Bowman spent four years as an assistant under Fairchild from 2016-19, but spent the last two seasons as the head coach of Davenport. In her second season at DU, her squad went 18-13 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Purdue Fort Wayne has 11 newcomers on the roster this season, 55 percent of the total roster. There are three true freshmen: Alise Moneypenny (C/INF), Gracie Brinkerhoff (RHP), Jamie Suppa (C/OF). There are eight transfers Hannah Richendollar (INF, Austin College), Brooke Wintlend (INF, Green Bay), Sonia Solis (OF, Central Arizona), Epiphany Hang (INF, Oakland CC), Thais Uyema (INF, Chipola College), Taryn Jenkins (INF, McCook CC), Taylor Warne (OF, Lake Land) and Brayden Lickey (INF/UTL, Eastern Illinois).
Pitching Staff Overview
The Mastodons return all three of their primary pitchers from the 2021 season: Shaina Eyre, Lauren McConnell and Jadelyn Johnson. Eyre has appeared in 95 games with 67 starts with four years of experience for the 'Dons, and has been named League Pitcher of the Week twice. Johnson and McConnell both threw a one-hitter of their own last season. The Mastodons also have senior Emma McMillan, sophomore Alyson Quinlan and freshman Gracie Brinkerhoff as options from the circle.

The Mastodons had the most home runs (38) in the Horizon League in the 2021, despite playing the third-fewest games in the league. The Mastodons will have a lot to replace in 2022, as the 'Dons only return one player with at least five homers: Alise Hale.
Last Year Was a Long Time Ago... What Happened?
In Germaine Fairchild's final season at Purdue Fort Wayne, she led the Mastodons to their best conference season in her seven-year tenure. The Mastodons reached double-digit league wins for just the sixth time since moving Division I prior to the 2002 season. The 'Dons split or won the season series against Cleveland State, Northern Kentucky and Green Bay.

Purdue Fort Wayne will play in the Chattanooga Challenge on February 18-20, facing off against Indiana State, Tennessee Tech, Northwestern State, Radford and Chattanooga.
