TROY, Ala. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team fell to Southern Illinois 8-0 and Troy 9-1 in the Trojan Classic on Saturday (Feb. 12).
GAME 1
Purdue Fort Wayne was on the wrong side of a dominant pitching performance Saturday as Madi Eberle threw a no-hitter for Southern Illinois, leading the Salukis over the Mastodons 8-0.
Freshman Gracie Brinkerhoff (0-1) got the ball to start for Purdue Fort Wayne (0-3) and took the loss.
Offensively, the Mastodons were led by junior Sonia Solis, who drew a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mastodons went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the third, when Solis made it into scoring position with nobody out.
GAME NOTES
» Southern Illinois was led offensively by junior Tori Schullian, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI.
» Eberle led the Salukis pitching staff, who went the distance in the no-hitter.
GAME 2
The Mastodons had a tough showing on Saturday, falling to the Troy Trojans 9-1 despite the efforts of junior Thais Uyema, who went 1-for-2 with a triple.
Senior Shaina Eyre (0-2) got the start for Purdue Fort Wayne (0-4) and took the loss.
Uyema led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a triple. Freshman Brayden Lickey went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mastodons were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put a run on the board. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Lickey, scoring Taryn Jenkins from third base. The Mastodons were unable to get any closer, as Troy added seven runs to their tally on the way to a 9-1 final.
GAME NOTES
» Jenkins stole two bases in Saturday's game.
» Uyema led the Mastodons at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a triple.
» Troy was led offensively by junior Kelly Horne, who went 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBIs.
