'Dons Drop a Pair to Oakland in Doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team fell in a pair of closely contested Horizon League games on Saturday (April 2) to Oakland 5-3 and 4-1.
GAME 1 | Oakland 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 3
Mastodons took a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 5-3.
Shaina Eyre (1-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne. Lauren McConnell was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.1 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
Sonia Solis led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI. Brooke Wintlend put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs. Emma McMillan also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Purdue Fort Wayne with a double.
The Mastodons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Solis, scoring Alise Hale from second base.
The Golden Grizzlies then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Mastodons got back on the board in the fifth. Purdue Fort Wayne picked up two runs when a single from Wintlend brought home McMillan and Hale, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mastodons. The Mastodons were unable to hold the lead, as Oakland scored three times over the remaining two innings to grab the 5-3 win.

Purdue Fort Wayne got three hits from Brayden Lickey in a 4-1 loss in the nightcap.
Gracie Brinkerhoff (2-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne (4-24, 3-8). Senior Lauren McConnell was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Lickey's three-hit day led the Mastodons offensively. Epiphany Hang put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Trailing 4-0, the Mastodons first put a run on the board in the seventh inning. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Hang, scoring Lickey from third base.
