'Dons Sweep Doubleheader With Walk-Off Win in Game Two

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne took a pair from Northern Kentucky on Friday (April 22) in a Horizon League baseball doubleheader. The Mastodons won game one 4-2 and then earned a 4-3 walk-off victory in game two on a two-out RBI single by Dylan Stewart. The 'Dons have won eight of their last 10 games.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 4, Northern Kentucky 2
JD Deany set the tone for the 'Dons in game one. He fanned a career-high nine Northern Kentucky hitters over 6.2 innings of work to help propel the 'Dons to the win. Justin Miller came in for the final out of the seven-inning contest. He entered with the bases loaded and the tying runs in scoring position. He got ahead of the only hitter he would face, 0-2, and then earned a fielder's choice ground out to end the game. Miller received his third save of the year for the outing. Deany got the win and is now 3-1.
All of the runs in the game came in the first inning. Northern Kentucky scored a pair only to see the 'Dons respond with four in the first. The big hit was a three-run home run by Garett Lake.

Stewart was the hero on the nightcap. Cade Fitzpatrick opened the ninth with a single with the game tied at three. Garrett Maish came in to pinch run and moved to second on a wild pitch. An Evenson ground out put the winning run at third. Two intentional walks and a stirkeout brought Stewart to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. He took a 2-1 pitch into left center field for the game winning hit.
Brian Skelton (3-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Purdue Fort Wayne. The right-hander went 3.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out three. He worked 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth. Mitchell Spencer started the ballgame and went five innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on three hits, walking four and striking out two. He picked up a no-decision.
The Mastodons got on the board with a single run in the second and another in the third. Both were clutch two-out hits. The run in the second came on an RBI single from Brian Erbe, scoring Fitzpatrick from second base. The third was a double by Ben Higgins to make the score 2-0.
Northern Kentucky fired back to tie the ballgame at two before Purdue Fort Wayne reclaimed a 3-2 advantage in the sixth inning. Jack Lang had a triple and scored on a Higgins sacrifice fly.
Northern Kentucky rallied to tie the ballgame at 3-3 before Purdue Fort Wayne walked it off in the bottom of the ninth thanks to Stewart.
