FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne opened a three-game series against second place UIC on Friday (April 29) with a 7-3 loss.
JD Deany went 6.0 innings for the Mastodons. While he took the loss and is now 3-2, he settled in late to retire 11 consecutive UIC batters. However, it happened after Cole Conn hit a three-run home run in the third inning for the Flames to put UIC up 6-0.
The 'Dons got on the board in the fifth when Brian Erbe used an RBI groundout to score Alex Evenson. Evenson started the inning with a single.
The sixth saw the 'Dons make it a 6-2 game with Evenson involved again. This time he had a two-out RBI double to knock in Jack Lang.
Purdue Fort Wayne held the Flames off the board before narrowing the gap to 6-3 in the eighth. The Mastodons recorded the run on Ben Higgins' two-out solo home run off Joey Morris. It is Higgins' team-best ninth home run of the season.
UIC added one in the ninth to make the final 7-3.
Higgins also had a walk to go with his home run on the day. Lang also had a walk in addition to a double in the first inning.
