Penguins Take Two From ‘Dons on Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Youngstown State received a pair of stellar pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday (April 30).
GAME 1 | Youngstown State 9, Purdue Fort Wayne 3
All nine starters reached safely for the 'Dons in the opener.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning with a two spot. Brayden Lickey doubled in Sonia Solis for the first run. Emma McMillan followed with an RBI to score Lickey.
YSU tied it with two in the third and then broke it up with seven runs in the fourth.
Epiphany Hang added an RBI single in the fourth to make the final 9-3.
Shaina Eyre got the ball to start for Purdue Fort Wayne. She took the loss and is now 3-14. Freshman Gracie Brinkerhoff came out of the bullpen. She threw 3.1 innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
Lickey was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Hang went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Taylor Warne also contributed for the 'Dons, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk.
Youngstown State's Sophie Howell went the distance for a 7.0 complete game. She is now 6-8 with the win.
GAME NOTES.
» The 'Dons had chances, but stranded 12 runners in the loss.
» Purdue Fort Wayne went 5-for-15 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» The Mastodons drew five walks.

Youngstown State's Elle Buffenbarger threw a no-hitter for Youngstown State in game two.
The 'Dons scored without the benefit of a hit in the sixth. Camryn Mosher opened the inning with a hit by pitch and Taylor Warne walked. They were sacrificed over for the first out of the inning. Mosher then came around to score on a Thais Uyema sacrifice fly.
Jadelyn Johnson (1-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Emma McMillan had a beauty of a throw from center to end the third inning. She threw out Youngstown State's Grace Cea to end the frame as Cea was trying to score on a fly ball.
Youngstown State scored two in the fourth and fifth and then added another in the sixth. Roach had a home run for the Penguins.
GAME NOTES
» Mastodon pitching recorded four strikeouts.
» The Penguins improve to 29-22 (14-9 Horizon League). The 'Dons fall to 7-39 (6-17 Horizon).
