
Mastodon Baseball Heads South to Play Bethune-Cookman

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Mastodons will travel to Daytona Beach, Florida this weekend for a non-league series against Bethune-Cookman. It will be the second series for the Mastodon 2023 baseball season.

Scouting the Wildcats: The Wildcats are 2-2 this season. They had two wins over Lehigh last weekend. Last season, the Wildcats went 27-32 overall, going 19-11 in SWAC play. Colton Olasin is hitting .462 with a 1.025 OPS. He has knocked in four runs. Daniel Gaviria has a .86 WHIP in 7.0 innings. The Wildcats are coming into their season this year with the 37th nationally ranked JUCO recruiting class in the country.
Making It Look Easy: Cade Nelis had the Mastodons' first home run of the season in the season opening series at Alabama State. It was his first home run of his career. Nelis had 15 hits last season.
Batter Up: Newcomers Caileb Johnson, Grant Thoroman, Tyler Nelson, Jacob Walker, Eli Tencza and Colton Shirtley each recorded their first hit as a Mastodon last weekend.
Batter Up X2: Caileb Johnson finished off the weekend with three hits. Johnson, a transfer from Carl Sandburg College, knocked in two runs in the Mastodons' second game of the series. Prior to transferring, Johnson finished his 2022 season off with eight home runs and 49 hits in 149 at bats.
My Oh Myer: Jacob Myer allowed just one run with four hits and seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings on Saturday. He came up one out of getting the victory in the game.
Back for More: The 2023 season is Justin Miller's fifth as a Mastodon. Miller owns 181 career strikeouts, the second most in program history for a career. He will look to pass Jason Horvath (2001-04) for the most in program history this season. Horvath recorded 210 strikeouts.
