FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Mastodons open the fifth season of the Doug Schreiber era with a three-game non-league series at Murray State this weekend. The schedule has been adjusted to a Saturday - Monday slate due to weather.

Series History: Murray State leads 11-5. The two clubs last played a four-game series in 2021 with the Racers winning the series 3-1. In the 16 all-time matchups, all but three have been played in Murray with the 2015 series, the only exception, moved to Emerson, Georgia due to impending weather.

Scouting the Racers: Murray State was 31-28 last season, going 14-13 in their first year playing in the Missouri Valley Conference. They won two games in the MVC tournament, but were knocked out in losses to Evansville and Missouri State. Redshirt juniors Drew Vogel and Dustin Mercer were named to the 2024 Preseason Missouri Valley All-Conference team. Mercer was named first-team All-Conference after hitting .329 with 10 steals while starting all 59 games in right field. Vogel was named second-team All-Conference last season after batting .297 with seven homers in 42 games as the Racers shortstop.
Scouting the Mastodons: The Mastodons begin 2024 led by All-Horizon League outfielder Ben Higgins. The Macomb, Illinois native made 44 starts and ranked second in slugging percentage (.743), third in OPS (1.155) and third in home runs (10) in Horizon League games. On the mound, Mac Ayres returns to the rotation after leading the 'Dons with 13 starts on the mound and pitching a team-high 64.0 innings. He's joined in the opening weekend rotation by Brody Fine, who made 18 appearances and five starts last year, and Carter Sabol who made one start for Ohio a year ago.
Back for More: Four Mastodons will be competing in their fifth season of collegiate baseball. Ben Higgins, Luke Miles, Cade Fitzpatrick, and Kyle Maurer are all back for a fifth season, with Miles spending all five years with the 'Dons.
