STATESBORO, Ga. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday (Feb. 23) on the opening day of the GATA Challenge.
GAME 1 - Georgia Southern 8, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Georgia Southern got out to 4-0 start in the opening frame thanks to a three-run home run by Jess Mazur. Bailey Manos had her glove on it at the center field wall, but could not corral it to rob the homer.
From there, the home team added one more in the second and three more in the third.
The Mastodons had three hits in the contest. Manos, McKenna Minton and Brooke Lickey each had one.
Alanah Jones took the loss for the 'Dons. Anslie Pettit got the win in 3.2 innings pitched. Kayla Roberts threw 2.2 innings of relief, tying a season-high with three strikeouts.
GAME 2 - Georgia Southern 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
Epiphany Hang had a hit and an RBI in the second game against the Eagles, but Georgia Southern won the second game of the DH.
Hang got the 'Dons up 1-0 in the first, bringing Manos home. Manos reached on an error and worked her way around to third before Hang's single up the middle got her all the way around to score.
Gracie Brinkerhoff held the Eagles without a run until the third. It took just one single for GSU after a player was hit by a pitch to get on base.
An inning later, a single, sacrifice bunt and double scored another run for the Eagles. In the sixth, they added another with a pair of singles.
Brinkerhoff got credited with the loss. Alana Barnard got the complete game win.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 2-9. Georgia Southern improves to 5-3. These two teams will meet tomorrow (Feb. 24), but the Mastodons will play Presbyterian first at 11 a.m.
