Mastodon Softball Picks Up 10-Inning Win Over Presbyterian

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team picked up a win on Saturday (Feb. 24) over Presbyterian in thrilling fashion. The 'Dons won in the 10th inning on a walk-off single from Bailey Manos.
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Presbyterian 2 (10 innings)
With no runs scored through the first six, both teams scored one in the seventh to keep it tied and going to extra innings. The Blue Hose and 'Dons each scored one in the ninth, but only the Mastodons scored another in the 10th.
Presbyterian broke open the scoring in the seventh with a solo shot to left field. Backs against the wall, the Mastodons managed to even it up when Alanah Jones doubled and Gwen McMenemy brought her home on a single two at-bats later. Jones then struck out two in the eighth, stranding the placed runner at third.
In the ninth, PC scored their tie-breaking runner with a sacrifice bunt advancing her to third and a groundout scoring her. The Mastodons retaliated with a sac bunt of their own from Brooke Lickey to advance Epiphany Hang to third. Tori Countryman hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Hang and extend the game.
In the 10th, Jones struck out one more and was then placed on second in the bottom of the inning. She was pushed to third with a single from Brayden Lickey, then Lickey stole second during the next at bat. With two in scoring position, Manos singled to left to score the game-winning run.
Jones finished 1-for-2 in the batter's box with two runs and picked up the win from the pitcher's circle. She threw 3.2 innings of relief and struck out four. Gracie Brinkerhoff threw 6.1 innings and gave up just the one run in the seventh inning. PC's Jenna Greene threw all 9.1 and took the loss.
Presbyterian fell to 5-7.
GAME 2: Georgia Southern 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
In the Mastodons' third game against Georgia Southern this weekend, it was the most competitive. The Eagles, however, came away with a 3-2 win on their home field.
The Eagles scored first in the opening frame thanks to a walk and two singles. However, Alyson Quinlan got out of the inning with two strikeouts in a row.
The 'Dons took the lead in the second with two runs, both coming at the bat of Brayden Lickey. She had a double to left field to score McKenna Minton and Hang. From there, Georgia Southern had a home run in the third and an RBI single in the fourth to take the lead it did not give up.
Alyson Quinlan threw 4.0 innings and took the loss despite four strikeouts. Jones threw 2.0 in relief and struck out one. GSU's Bailey Holland got the complete-game win.
Georgia Southern improved to 7-3. The Mastodons moved to 3-10 after the split. The Mastodons will play Presbyterian again tomorrow (Feb. 25) for the final game of the weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET.
