
'Dons Split Opening Day With Win Over MVSU

GAME 1 - Houston Christian 11, Purdue Fort Wayne 6
The Mastodons jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Houston Christian put together two big innings to top the Mastodons 11-6 in the 2024 season opener.
The Mastodons scored five runs in the first inning of the season. McKenna Minton recorded her first-career RBI for the first for the 'Dons. She drew a walk with bases loaded to bring Tori Countryman home. Brayden Lickey knocked a single to third base to score Bailey Manos and Brooke Wintlend. Brooke Lickey also singled, bringing home Lickey and Minton.
Houston Christian scored its first run in the second after a double and single to bring the score to 5-1. The game remained at that score until the fourth. The Huskies scored five to take the lead which they did not relinquish. They added five more insurance runs in the fifth.
The Mastodons started to mount a comeback in the seventh when Gwen McMenemy got on base with a single to start the inning. Grace Hollopeter joined her with a single in the next at bat, then Aglaia Rudd brough McMenemy home with a single of her own. Manos singled to load the bases, but the three 'Dons were stranded on base.
All nine batters reached the basepaths.
Gracie Brinkerhoff took the loss in 3.1 innings. Freshman Kayla Roberts threw 3.2 innings of relief. HCU's Lyndie Swanson (1-0) got the win in 6.1 innings.
Houston Christian improved to 1-0.
GAME 2 - Purdue Fort Wayne 2, Mississippi Valley State 0
Alanah Jones threw the first complete game shutout of her career as the Mastodons beat Mississippi Valley State 2-0.
Jones went the full seven innings while striking out 10 Devilettes. She had at least one K in every inning.
It took just one extra base hit for the 'Dons to score and it came at the bat of Hollopeter. In the fifth inning, she drilled a home run over the left field wall to bring home McMenemy, who had safely reached on a bunt the at bat prior. This put the Mastodons up 2-0, the score that held until the final out.
The Mastodons amassed seven hits. Hollopeter and Manos had two each and Epiphany Hang, Ella Carriere and McMenemy had one each.
Jones moves to 1-0 with the complete game victory. Maya Ramirez threw all seven innings for Mississippi Valley State and took the loss to fall to 0-1.
Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 1-1. Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-2. The Mastodons will play Alabama State and Austin Peay on Saturday (Feb. 10) at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET, respectively.
