YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne dropped the 2024 Horizon League baseball opener on Friday (March 15) at Youngstown State 4-2.
Teddy Ruffner had a three-RBI double for the Penguins in the third to put the home squad up 3-0. While YSU would add a run in the fourth, the three runs would be all they need. The 'Dons got on the board in the fourth with a Ben Higgins sacrifice fly. Nate Simpson used a sacrifice fly of his own in the seventh to score Justin Osterhouse to make the score 4-2.
Osterhouse finished two hits and a walk. Grant Thoroman had a double and two walks.
Mac Ayres is 0-3 after taking the loss. He allowed four runs with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Owen Willard kept the 'Dons in it with three scoreless innings out of the pen. He allowed just one hit in his three innings of work.
Jacob Gehring went 8.0 innings for the win. Casey Marshalwitz threw the ninth for the save for the Penguins.
The 'Dons fall to 6-13 (0-1 Horizon League). The 'Guins improve to 2-15 (1-0 Horizon League). Game two of the series from Mahoning Valley is set for Saturday.
