Grace Hollopeter Homers Twice on Second Day of Coach B Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team fell to Purdue 6-2 and Southern Illinois 16-4 on Sunday (March 2), despite a pair of homers from Grace Hollopeter.
Game 1: Purdue 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Purdue jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then extended it to a 2-0 lead in the third with a solo home run.
Purdue Fort Wayne responded with back-to-back runs in the fourth and fifth innings with a solo home run from Hollopeter. McKenna Minton scored on a double-steal attempt in the fifth.
Purdue got three runs in the fifth that put a comeback out of reach.
Alanah Jones threw 6.0 innings and recorded five strikeouts. Gracie Brinkerhoff was effective in 1.0 innings of relief with a strikeout and no earned runs.
Kendall Klochack got the win for Purdue. The Boilermakers improved to 12-7.
Game 2: Southern Illinois 16, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
Southern Illinois led 5-0 after the first inning thanks to some big hitting, finding two triples and a home run in the opening frame.
The Mastodons managed two runs in the second inning on a pair of ground-out RBIs from Brooke Lickey and Gwen McMenemy.
In the fourth, Hollopeter sent a long ball over the left field wall, but SIU answered with eight runs in the fourth.
McMenemy had another RBI in the fifth to bring home Addison Zimpleman, but the Salukis turned away the 'Dons from there.
The Mastodons finished with 11 hits, their second-most of the season.
Aubrey Zachary suffered the loss, while SIU's Kaytee Dahlstrom got the win. Southern Illinois improved to 5-13 and the 'Dons fell to 2-10.
The 'Dons return to action on Saturday (March 8) at the EKU Colonel Classic.
