Mastodons Pick Up Road Victory at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Purdue Fort Wayne softball beat Youngstown State 6-0 in the opening game of its series against the Penguins, before YSU beat the 'Dons 7-4 in the rematch on Thursday (April 3).
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 6, Youngstown State 0
The Mastodons used a three-run first inning to take the lead which they never relented. After Bailey Manos walked, McKenna Minton advance her to second and reached on her own off an error. Aglaia Rudd singled a little later to bring Manos home, then Tori Countryman had a single to score Minton and Rudd.
An inning later, Manos had a two-run homer that brought home Gwen McMenemy, who singled at the previous at bat.
While keeping the Penguins scoreless in their halves of innings, the Mastodons added another run in the fourth when Manos singled to score McMenemy again. The scoring stopped there for the 'Dons, but Alanah Jones was dealing from the circle. She struck out five Penguins while allowing just four hits and no runs. She picked up the win to improve to 7-9.
Kelsey Ogin took the loss for Youngstown State to fall to 4-6.
Manos finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
GAME 2: Youngstown State 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
Youngstown State had a four-run fourth inning that was the difference in the contest.
Trailing 2-0, Purdue Fort Wayne got two runs in the third thanks to a triple from Manos and a ground out RBI from Minton.
After YSU put four on the board in the fourth, the Mastodons started to mount a comeback in the seventh. Brooke Lickey doubled, then McMenemy walked, then both advanced on a wild pitch. Lickey was able to score on a throwing error from the catcher after the wild pitch. Manos got her fifth RBI of the day on a sac fly to center field, but Youngstown State got three outs in a row to cut the comeback short.
Aubrey Zachary started and took the loss for the 'Dons despite four strikeouts. Grace Brinkerhoff was relatively effective in relief, throwing 2.0 and allowing just two hits.
Maci Boggess got the win with a complete game to move to 1-7.
With the split, Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 9-17, 5-3 Horizon League while Youngstown State went to 10-27, 2-6.
These two teams will meet again on Friday (April 4) at 2 p.m.
