FORT WAYNE, Ind. - With a split with Green Bay on Saturday (May 3), the Purdue Fort Wayne softball team claimed the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship. The Mastodons will play Northern Kentucky on Wednesday (May 7) in Cleveland.
This is the first time the Mastodons have qualified for the Horizon League Championship since joining the league prior to the 2021 season. The Mastodons finished the league season 14-10, their most league wins since 2012.
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 1, Green Bay 0
Game one of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel that went the way of Purdue Fort Wayne.
Alanah Jones threw all 7.0 innings, finishing with three strikeouts and giving up four hits. She picked up her 13th win of the season, extending her career-best mark. Paeton Kringel suffered the loss despite giving up one earned run.
The Mastodons strung together six hits including two in the third that resulted in the go-ahead run. Tori Countryman doubled to center then Grace Hollopeter doubled down the left field line to bring Countryman home.
That was all the offense needed to do, as the defense held its own the rest of the way. The Mastodons stranded nine Green Bay players on the base paths, including three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Of the four Green Bay hits, none were more than singles. The Mastodons had four doubles on their six hits.
GAME 2: Green Bay 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
In game two, the Phoenix used a run in each of the second and fifth innings to take a lead they did not yield. In the second, it was an RBI single. In the fifth, a double brought one runner home.
Green Bay padded its lead with a four-run sixth, including a three-run homer from Sara Ebner. The Mastodons cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame when Bailey Manos singled up the middle to score McKenna Minton, but that's where the offense halted.
Countryman had two of the Mastodons four hits in the contest both singles.
Genesis Eggart got the win for Green Bay to move to 11-12. Gracie Brinkerhoff suffered the loss to fall to 4-2. Aubrey Zachary had two strikeouts and two hits in her 1.2 innings of relief.
With the split on Saturday, Purdue Fort Wayne moved to 18-24, 14-10 in the Horizon League. Green Bay moved to 17-30, 10-14 in the HL. The Phoenix will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming #HLSB Championship.
