Xenia, OH - The IPFW baseball team opened the 2011 season on Tuesday night against Butler at the Athletes in Action complex in Xenia, Ohio. The Mastodons pounded out eight hits in the game but fell by the final of 8-3.
Butler opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as third baseman Grant Fillipitch doubled to right center off of IPFW starter Ryan August. The Fillipitch two-bagger plated left fielder Kyle Waggoner who singled to lead off the game.
The Bulldogs (2-3) added three more in the second off of IPFW miscues and tacked on three more in the third, with a pair of runs scoring on an RBI single to center by second baseman Luke Duncan.
BU held on to their 7-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning.
Senior left fielder Cody Galbraith got the 'Dons on the board with an RBI double down the right field line that chased home center fielder Kurt Dudley who reached on a single of his own to open the frame.
The big blow of the inning came from the bat of sophomore designated hitter Austin Bower who singled back up the middle driving in first baseman A.J. Christensen and Galbraith to cut the Butler lead to 7-3. But Bulldog reliever Brad Schnitzer settled down and struck out the final two Mastodons of the inning to limit the damage.
IPFW would get no closer in the game. Butler added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Waggoner RBI single to make the final, 8-3.
Fillipitch was 3-4 for the Bulldogs with an RBI and run scored. Starter Mike Hernandez got the win for BU (1-1), tossing two innings of no-hit ball. He struck out two and walked one.
August (0-1) took the loss for IPFW. He was charged with seven runs (five earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Up next for the Mastodons in a three-game series as Arkansas-Little Rock that begins on Thursday afternoon.
