Shreveport, LA - The IPFW baseball team couldn't overcome Centenary's blazing start and fell to the Gents, 18-8 in the opening game of a four-game set at Shehee Stadium on Friday night.
The Gents (4-21, 1-8 SL) jumped on IPFW started Nick Optiz quickly, scoring five runs in the first two innings.
The Mastodons got a pair in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by first baseman A.J. Christensen and capitalized on a Centenary error for their other tally.
But as quickly as IPFW closed in, the Gents exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 11-2.
The 'Dons tried to chip away at the lead, scoring three in the 5th inning and three in the 6th, two coming on a two-run single by designated hitter Will Faulkner, but the comeback was stopped as the Gents got five more to end the game early in the 7th on the run rule.
The Centenary offensive attack was led by third baseman R.J. Talamantes and left fielder Mark Gillean with four hits each.
Gents starter Nic Parrott went 4.1 innings for his first win of the season (1-1). He gave up five runs (four earned) of seven hits.
Opitz took the loss for IPFW (3-5), giving up nine runs on nine hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Christensen was 3-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Freshman left fielder Steve Danielak was also 3-4 with an RBI.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 10-21 and 5-4 in conference play. The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday.
