Tulsa, OK - Center fielder Kurt Dudley homered and shortstop Will Faulkner drove in the game-winner in the 11th inning as IPFW split a twinbill with the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Mastodons outlasted ORU, 5-4 in Game 1, but allowed a Golden Eagle onslaught late in Game 2 to fall 14-3.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles (21-17, 10-5) took a 2-0 lead into the 5th inning, but that's when the Mastodons did most of their damage. Dudley got the inning started with his second homer of the season, a solo shot to right field. The 'Dons would then load the bases against ORU starter Sean Johnson. Second baseman Garrett Segraves would come through with a two-run single scoring Kristian Gayday and Nate Thomas. The Mastodons finished of their four-run inning on an RBI single to center by designated hitter Brett Clark.
Oral Roberts got one back in the bottom of the 5th inning. Center fielder Joey Winiecki led off the frame with a triple to left field. He scored an inning later on a ground out by Nick Baligod.
In the bottom of the sixth, left fielder Brandon King led off with a solo shot to right off of IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson. Kesterson would get out of the inning, but would give way to reliever Matt Ransbottom in the seventh.
Ransbottom and ORU reliever Matt Rush put zeros on the board until the top of the 11th inning. Gayday singled to lead off. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cory Miller, but Rush threw the ball away at first allowing Gayday to move to third. He would come home on the Faulkner sacrifice fly.
Ransbottom hit a batter in the bottom of the 11th to put the tying run on, but induced three fly balls to get the win. Ransbottom (3-2) gave up just a single base hit over five innings while punching out one.
Rush (1-3) took the loss. He gave up just the one run on two hits. He struck out and walked two.
In Game 2, Oral Roberts opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with two coming off the bat of catcher Bennett Pickar.
IPFW would match that tally in the top of the third. Clark, A.J. Christensen and Thomas all brought runs home with RBI singles.
It looked like Game 2 would be another one-run affair, but that all fell apart in the bottom of the 5th inning. Oral Roberts scored six times in the inning, five coming after two outs including a two-run homer off the bat of left fielder, Chris Elder.
ORU added five more in the sixth to win going away, 14-3. Starter Alex Gonzalez fanned 13 Mastodons for while evening his record at 5-5.
IPFW starter Ryan August took the loss (2-4). He gave up nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits over five innings.
With the split, IPFW's record stands at 12-25 and 7-8 in Summit League play.
The Golden Eagles and Mastodons wrap up their four-game set on Sunday at Johnson Stadium.
