Indianapolis, IN - One school record, by Theresa McHugh in the javelin throw, and eight other personal bests came out of Indianapolis late Saturday night, as the IPFW Mastodons got their final tune-ups for the 2011 Summit League Championships at the Stan Lyon Invitational, hosted by Butler University.
McHugh, who is in her first year of throwing the javelin, broke her own school record with a toss of 125-feet, 10-inches (38.13 meters), over nine feet further than the record, and 14 feet from the school record heading into this season. The throw is the fourth longest in the conference this season heading into the league championships in two weeks.
Felicia Mondry ran to a 10-second personal best in the 5,000-meter run, placing second in the strong field in a time of 17:37.50, a time that puts her ninth on the performance list in the Summit League. Jordan Tomecek placed 20th in the same event with a time of 18:54.21 over the 3.1 miles, as Rebecca Jacobs (24th/19:07.34) and Kim Matusik (26th/19:18.13) rounded out the quartet of 'Dons in the field.
Junior Sarah Hutchings nearly ran a personal-best in the steeple chase, falling a second shy with her time of 11:06.83, which placed her fifth in the field, while her best time this season, 11:05.99, puts her fourth on the Summit League performance list. Mondry, who is first on the list, and Hutchings are the highest ranking pair in the event.
In her last go-around in the collegiate track & feld circuit, Sara Branam is putting an indelible mark on the record books at IPFW, as she placed fifth in the most recent hammer throw competition with a toss of 167-2 (50.96 meters), the second longest throw in IPFW history, as the senior has all 10 of the top marks in program history, including seeing six of those set this season. Her season-long throw of 175-2 puts her in the third position heading into the upcoming league championships. Kierstyn Jones, who competed in both the hammer throw and the shot put, nearly climbed into the top-10 throwers list in the hammer throw with a toss of 127-1 (38.74 meters), placing 38th, while taking 35th in the shot put with a toss of 32-0 (9.75 meters).
Junior Courtney Bowen took 12th in the discus throw with a toss of 130-1 (39.65 meters), and is poised to score big points for the Mastodons in the event at the league championships, as she currently sits fourth with her school-record toss of 150-11 (46.00 meters) that was set two weeks earlier. Bowen also attempted the javelin at Butler for the first time this season, finishing with a throw of 91-1 (27.76 meters), which put her as the ninth best javelin thrower in program history. Amaya Ayers also heaved the spear, finishing 33rd with a toss of 70-11 (21.63) in her first try at the event.
Heading into her first collegiate conference championships, Kaylin Taylor competed twice on Saturday evening, both covering one lap on the track. The freshman placed 17th in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:08.95, the fifth fastest time in program history. Her top time this season, 1:08.25, puts her just outside of the top-10 in the league. Taylor was also one of three Mastodons to compete in the open 400, leading the trio with a time of 1:02.15, a new personal best, and the sixth fastest time in program history. Julie Jeszenszky placed 24th in the event with a time of 1:04.34, becoming the ninth fastest quarter-miler in program history, as Jasmine Perry finished right behind with a time of 1:05.01.
Kayla Boyes led a trio of Mastodon runners in the 800-meter run, finishing 24th with a time of 2:23.6, a new personal-best and the 10th best time in program history. Jessic McNulty placed 41st in 2:39.06, as Nicole Parry set a new season-best with a time of 2:40.80. Boyes currently sits 24th in the Summit League with her time, as teammate Hutchings is three spots ahead of her at 21st with a time of 2:22.21 heading into the championships.
Freshman Perry competed in two other events outside of the 400, as she set a new personal-best in the 200-meter dash, placing 17th in a time of 26.20, the third fastest time in program history, and sprinted to a time of 12.89 in the 100-meter dash, placing 16th in the field for the sixth fastest time in program history. Perry stands 21st in the league in the 100-meter dash heading into the championships, and is just outside of the top-25 in the 200-meter sprint.
On Thursday, freshman Tomecek, who competed Saturday in the 5k, placed 24th in the 10,000-meter run at the prestigious Drake Relays, finishing five seconds off of her personal-best in the 6.2-mile, 25-lap race. Tomecek's time is currently second in the league over the endurance event.
The Mastodons take a week off of competition before traveling to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to compete in the 2011 Summit League Championships, hosted by South Dakota State University.
