IPFW Falls to Alabama A&M 8-5 in Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The IPFW men's baseball team was defeated by the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Friday afternoon by the final score of 8-5. Markus Kalber went 1-for-3 with two RBI's in the loss.
The 'Dons found themselves down two runs after the bottom of the fourth inning, but a two run top of the fifth would tie the game up. Alabama A&M got hot again in the bottom of the seventh, posting four runs to increase the lead to 6-2. IPFW would once again answer with a three run eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs poured on two more in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory.
The action started for IPFW in the fifth inning as Kristian Gayday led off with a walk. Clay Hathaway followed him in the lineup and doubled to centerfield moving Gayday to third. The 'Dons scored their first run of the season on a sacrifice fly from Kalber. The Bulldogs helped push the second run across the plate with a passed ball and an error.
IPFW took advantage of some wild throws to score runs in the eighth inning. Daren Boss and Caleb Fenimore were both hit by a pitch early in the inning. After a Steve Danielak walk, Fenimore advanced to second which put Boss on third. An error on Alabama A&M's centerfield extended the inning and allowed two runs to score. The third run came in off a Kalber single to centerfield.
Charles Weaver was tagged with the loss on the hill for IPFW. Weaver threw six complete innings and only allowed three hits. The Bulldogs scored two runs off Weaver, yet only one was earned. Weaver hit one batter and struck out five.
Kevin Kimball finished off the game for the Mastodons. Kimball threw two innings and allowed two hits. The Bulldogs were able to score six runs off Kimball, four of which were earned.
IPFW will have a chance to play Alabama A&M again tomorrow as the Bulldogs will host a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
