Chicago State Comes Back to Beat IPFW 3-2

CHICAGO -- IPFW held a one run lead for a majority of the game, but the Chicago State Cougars posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Mastodons by the final score of 3-2.
IPFW recorded seven hits compared to 11 from CSU. Each team recorded an error on Wednesday night. Steve Danielak was hit with the loss on the mound for the Mastodons. He allowed four hits in the ninth inning which led to the Cougar comeback.
IPFW scored first as Markus Kalber came home after an RBI single from Daren Boss. Kalber reached on a throwing error by the Chicago State third baseman. He moved to second on the error and reached third after a Clay Hathaway groundout. Boss pushed his single through the left side of the infield giving the 'Dons an early lead.
Chicago State scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Carter DeBoe broke the 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the fifth inning. IPFW held on to the narrow margin until the ninth inning, when the Cougars completed the comeback earning their second win of the year.
Nate White got the start on the mound for IPFW. He only allowed one earned run off five hits in his 4.2 innings of work. White struck out five and only issued one walk. Drew Overman entered the game from the bullpen with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning. He got Ratajczyk to pop out with runners on first and third to keep the one-run lead. Overman was on the mound for 2.1 innings. He struck out one while giving up two hits.
Kevin Kimball and Steve Danielak were also on the mound for the 'Dons. Kimball threw the eighth inning, while Danielak entered in the ninth. Kimball struck out two and walked two. Danielak made a big strikeout before blowing the save opportunity.
IPFW was led offensively by Daren Boss. The senior went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kristian Gayday and Markus Kalber also recorded two hits against Chicago State.
IPFW will return to action this weekend with a four-game road series against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The 'Dons are currently 2-2 in Summit League play.
