SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland is now 7-23 overall after beating Central Michigan on Wednesday by the final score of 11-8. The Grizzlies earned a series split at Oral Roberts on the opening weekend of league play this season (April 6-8). With the split, the Golden Grizzlies snapped the Golden Eagle's consecutive home league series wins at 39. The streak was the longest in the nation. ORU had not lost or split a home league series since a series split with Western Illinois in April 1998.
The start of the season was tough for Oakland as they faced two ranked opponents. Game one of the 2012 season came against No. 12 Vanderbilt on Feb. 22. The Grizzlies were defeated 11-4 and then were forced to face No. 24 Louisville in a three-game series.
Oakland's first victory of the season came in the final game of a four-game series against the Cincinnati Bearcats. They pushed their win streak to two games after defeating Ohio in the first game of their three-game series. The Bobcats went on to win the next two.
Spencer Marentette is tied with teammate Aaron Cieslak for the best batting average on the team (.306). Marentette has only started in 23 games, while Cieslak has been in the starting lineup for all 30. Cieslak leads the team in hits (37), doubles (12), home runs (5) and RBI's (21).
Cieslak earned his first career Summit League Player of the Week honor for his performance from March 26 – April 1. The senior first baseman hit .444 (8-for-18) in four games that week. He impacted the first game of a three-game series against Appalachian State by going 4-for-4 from the plate with three doubles, a home run, four RBI's, and three runs scored. He ended the week with six RBI's, five runs scored, four doubles and two stolen bases. IPFW's Charles Weaver was named Summit League Co-Pitcher of the Week during the same time frame along with John Straka of North Dakota State.
Mike Carson, Nolan Jacoby, and Tim Ryan also impact the Golden Grizzly lineup. Carson and Jacoby are each hitting .299 on the year with Ryan right behind them at .298. Ryan is a danger to opponents once on base as he leads the team in stolen bases. Ryan has reached safely 16 times on his 20 attempts.
Jeff Gorecki will be on the mound for Oakland on Friday afternoon. Gorecki is 2-4 on the year with an ERA of 5.23. Gorecki has spent 41.1 innings on the mound. He's struck out 24 batters and only issued nine walks.
Brady Adamek and Jason Hager will throw for Oakland during Saturday's doubleheader. Adamek is still looking for his first win of the season as he is 0-4 in his eight appearances. Hager is also winless on the mound with a record of 0-3. His ERA of 5.96 is slightly better than Adamek's 7.49.
Sunday's game will feature Hayden Fox throwing against Travis Reboulet. Fox leads the team in strikeouts with 33. He is 1-5 on the bump with an ERA of 7.20. Opponents are hitting .331 vs. Fox this season. He has allowed 32 runs in 35 innings of work.
