ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Mastodons took two tough losses on Saturday as the team lost 7-5 in game one and 7-4 in game two taking their Summit League record to 3-4 and their overall record to 11-23.
Jason Kalber threw all eight innings in game one. Kalber struck out four and only walked one, but he gave up 11 hits and six of the runs were earned as IPFW took a 7-5 loss.
Clay Hathaway and Carter DeBoe recorded four of IPFW's nine hits in the opening loss. Oakland hit a two-run home run in the first but the Mastodons came back to grab a 3-2 lead in the third. Oakland responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. An extra run in the eighth would seal the win as the Golden Grizzlies defeated IPFW 7-5.
The third inning was also key in game two of the doubleheader. Oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the 'Dons would cut it to 2-1 after scoring in the second. Each team scored two runs in the third, but the big difference came in the sixth inning as the Golden Grizzlies dropped three runs in the bottom of the sixth giving them the win.
The Mastodons went with Travis Reboulet on the hill instead of Kyle Sorensen in game two. Reboulet threw four innings and got the no decision which landed the loss on Kevin Kimball. Kimball threw 1.1 innings, allowing three runs. Nate White finished the game for IPFW. He struck out one , while allowing one hit in the final inning of play.
Clay Hathaway, Carter DeBoe and Shane Trevino all recorded one RBI in the second game. Trevino also scored two runs.
The Mastodons will try for the split tomorrow at OU Baseball Field as these two clubs go at it again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
