ROCHESTER, Mich. – The IPFW Mastodon baseball team was defeated by Oakland on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 11-6. Poor weather conditions pushed the start of the game back to 4 p.m.
Oakland scored 11 runs off 15 hits to earn the victory. IPFW posted their six runs off nine hits. The 'Dons committed two errors, while the Grizzlies ended the day with one.
Clay Hathaway played well for IPFW in the loss. He went 3-for-5 on the day with one RBI and two runs scored. Shane Trevino and Caleb Fenimore also impacted the game with two hits each.
The top of Oakland's lineup packed a punch on Sunday as the top two players in the batting order each had two RBI's. Aaron Cieslak recorded a team-high three RBI's. He was 3-for-4 on the day.
IPFW got off to a fast start as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Clay Hathaway recorded a single to centerfield as the lead-off man and he would come around to score the first run of the game off an RBI single from Malcolm White.
White advanced to third off a Shane Trevino single and would push the lead to 2-0 after scoring while Trevino was in a rundown. Trevino would eventually be tagged out, but the damage had been done as IPFW enjoyed the two-run lead.
Oakland's leadoff man also singled to get the bottom half of the inning underway. Kyle Sorensen walked the second batter of the game, and the Grizzlies would grab the lead at 3-2 after a three-run blast left the ballpark in left field.
The Golden Grizzlies scored two more runs in the third inning. IPFW retired the first two batters in order, but a string of walked batters got the 'Dons in trouble. They recorded the third out of the inning with the bases loaded keeping the score at 5-2.
Oakland took their lead to 6-2 by scoring another run in the fourth, but IPFW battled back with a run of their own in the fifth. White drew a walk on a 3-1 count to get on base. He moved to third off a Trevino single and scored off a sacrifice fly from Kristian Gayday.
A two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the fifth inning moved the Oakland lead to 8-3. Jake Morton hit the gap in right center field allowing Tim Ryan and Trent Drumheller to score.
IPFW came up with two runs in the sixth after Caleb Fenimore led off the inning with a single back up the middle of the field. Oakland made a pitching change after the hit. The new arm gave up a single to Hathaway and then walked Daren Boss. Lucas Salerno stood on third base as he reached on a fielder's choice after Fenimore's hit. A fielding error by Oakland allowed Salerno to score and White was able to draw a walk after a 3-1 count pushing Hathaway to the plate. The 'Dons left three runners on base as a foul out ended the inning.
IPFW's final run of the game was scored in the top of the seventh inning. Fenimore singled to center field and quickly advanced to second off a wild pitch. A groundout moved Fenimore to third and the catcher scored on a Hathaway single through the left side of the infield.
Three Mastodons got time on the mound for IPFW. Kyle Sorensen got the start and threw the first three innings of the game before being replaced by Drew Overman. Overman also tossed three innings as Steve Danielak made his entrance from the bullpen to throw the final two innings. Danielak allowed one earned run off three hits. He also stuck out three.
IPFW will not play a midweek game as they prepare for a four-game series against Southern Utah this coming weekend. Game one is slated for Friday, April 19 in Cedar City, Utah.
