CEDAR CITY, Utah -- IPFW took game one of the four-game series against Southern Utah by recording a 7-5 victory on Thursday night. Malcolm White doubled down the left field line in the sixth scoring both Clay Hathaway and Daren Boss to break the 3-3 tie.
Clay Hathaway and Daren Boss each scored two runs, while Malcolm White and Shane Trevino ended the day with two RBI's as IPFW earned their 12th win of the season. They are now 4-5 in Summit League play.
Each team scored one run in the third and two in the fourth, but a big sixth inning from IPFW proved to be the difference in this Summit League battle. Carter DeBoe scored the first run of the game for IPFW. DeBoe led off the third inning and reached first base after being hit by a pitch. DeBoe stole second and advanced to third after a Malcolm White sacrifice bunt. Shane Trevino delivered an RBI double to right center field sending DeBoe home for the first run of the game.
Southern Utah answered with a leadoff single, followed by a sacrifice bunt that put a runner in scoring position. A single back up the middle of the field tied the game at 1-1. DeBoe once again would break the tie as his RBI single would give IPFW the 2-1 lead. Trevino was able to earn another RBI after being walked with the bases loaded. IPFW would end the inning with three runners left on base, yet they took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the inning.
The lead wouldn't last long as Bo Cuthbertson hit a home run to start off the bottom of the fourth inning. Southern Utah tied the game up after scoring on a wild pitch.
The sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Mastodons scored four runs off four hits to take the lead. Hathaway led off the inning with a single and Daren Boss reached base after being hit. A DeBoe fly out was deep enough to advance both runners and the White double scored two.
White's hit caused a Southern Utah pitching change, but it didn't help as Trevino came up with a hit as the first batter vs. the new arm. Kristian Gayday sent White home and a sacrifice fly from Caleb Fenimore allowed Trevino to score the seventh run of the game. Southern Utah scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Mastodons held on for the 7-5 win.
Chuck Weaver and Steve Danielak provided IPFW with a one-two punch on the mound Thursday night. Weaver earned his third win of the season after throwing eight strong innings. He struck out 11 batters, while only walking one. Danielak picked up his sixth save of the season against the Thunderbirds. Danielak did not allow a hit to secure the IPFW win.
These two teams will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader. Game one will be played at 3:00 p.m.
