Southern Utah Sweeps Doubleheader vs. IPFW

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah Thunderbirds swept IPFW in a Friday afternoon doubleheader. The 'Dons took a 20-14 loss in game one, followed by a 7-3 setback in game two.
The Thunderbirds got off to a fast start in game one by scoring six runs in the first inning. They scored six more in the fifth to take an 18-11 advantage. The 'Dons scored three runs down the stretch, but SUU would also add two to secure the win.
Clay Hathaway and Caleb Fenimore each recorded four hits against the Thunderbirds. Hathaway paced the group with three RBI's and three runs scored. Daren Boss, Malcolm White and Shane Trevino also chipped in with two RBI's.
Jason Kalber got the start for IPFW. He fell to 4-6 on the year after throwing the first 4.2 innings of the game. Drew Overman and Danny Tursell also got time on the hill. Overman threw 1.1 innings, while Tursell ended the game by finishing off the final two innings.
Southern Utah won game two of the doubleheader 7-3. The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and eventually took a 7-0 lead after the sixth. IPFW posted three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Thunderbirds recorded the win.
Caleb Fenimore went 3-for-3 for IPFW. Fenimore scored a run and also picked up an RBI. Clay Hathaway and Daren Boss also impacted the game for IPFW. Hathaway was 2-for-4 as the leadoff man and Boss matched his 2-for-4 effort from the plate while adding an RBI.
Kyle Sorensen took the loss on the mound for IPFW. Sorensen threw five innings and struck out three. Kevin Kimball threw the final inning of the game. He ended the day with one strikeout.
The final game of the series between IPFW and Southern Utah will be played tomorrow at 3 p.m.
