CEDAR CITY, Utah – Steve Danielak and Carter DeBoe each recorded two hits for the Mastodons, but the team was unable to earn the victory as Southern Utah claimed an 8-2 win.
IPFW scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning, but a three-run sixth inning for Southern Utah would propel them to their 14th win of the season. With the loss, IPFW falls to 12-27 on the year with a 4-8 mark in Summit League play.
Kelsey Outram pitched well for Southern Utah. Outram struck out three batters in the first inning. He retired the first two in order, gave up a single back up the middle to Carter DeBoe, then ended the inning with another strikeout.
Steve Danielak recorded the second hit of the game for IPFW, and Daren Boss pushed the hit total to three after a single in the third. Danielak would help tie the game in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left center field. Kristian Gayday scored from first after being walked with two outs.
Southern Utah would quickly regain the lead with two RBI singles in the bottom of the inning. Travis Reboulet got two fast outs in the inning, but a walk and a wild pitch set the Thunderbirds up to take the lead.
The 'Dons were able to cut the SUU lead to one after scoring in the fifth. DeBoe recorded his second triple of the season which allowed Boss to come all the way around from first to score the run.
Southern Utah scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cushion their lead. After a leadoff walk, Justin Neuhart hit a double down the left field line pushing Cuthbertson across the plate for the first run of the inning.
A single through the left side of the infield would score two more runs and also signal the end of the day for Reboulet. Danielak entered the game from the bullpen to record the final out of the inning.
Southern Utah scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off four hits. Those two runs gave the T-Birds a six run lead. They made a pitching change to start the ninth inning replacing Outram with Kevin Kline. Outram ended the game with nine strikeouts in his eight innings of work.
IPFW will take Monday off and then return to action with a midweek game against the Valparaiso Crusaders. First pitch is scheduled Tuesday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
