FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- IPFW lost to South Dakota State on Friday afternoon by the final score of 3-0. Friday's contest was the first Summit League game of the season for the 'Dons. They will face the Jackrabbits three more times this weekend.
South Dakota State scored one run in the top of the third and two more in the seventh to earn the 3-0 victory. Beau Hanowski and Eric Cain led the team offensively with two hits each.
IPFW got a three-hit performance from Caleb Fenimore. The sophomore hit the ball all over the park with singles to right, left and center field.
The offense got started in the top of the third inning as Andrew Melton led off with a double to left field. He advanced to third off a passed ball, but eventually was tagged out trying to score off a fielder's choice. The run down moved Eric Danforth to second base and Danforth would go on to score the first run of the game off an RBI single from Eric Cain.
The Jackrabbits would add to their lead with a two-run seventh inning. Danforth scored another run for South Dakota State, this time off an RBI double from Cain. Cain advanced to third off an IPFW error and scored the third run of the game off a groundout to Clay Hathaway.
IPFW threatened to score in the sixth and eighth innings. Shane Trevino delivered a one out triple to left center field in the sixth but was stranded on third as Stephen Bougher retired the next two batters in order. The eighth inning got off to a great start as Carter DeBoe doubled to right field. Malcolm White followed in the order with a single down the third base line advancing DeBoe to third. An inning ending ground double play would get the Jackrabbits out of trouble as the Mastodons fall to 8-19 on the year.
Chuck Weaver was on the hill for IPFW. Weaver threw seven full innings and struck out four batters. Two of the three runs recorded against Weaver were earned. Kevin Kimball threw the final two innings for IPFW. Kimball didn't allow a hit as he also struck out two.
The win went to Stephan Bougher. It was his fourth of the year. Bougher struck out eight 'Dons to record the shutout even though he allowed seven hits. Austin Busse entered the game for the save. It was his first of the season.
IPFW will face South Dakota State tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Jason Kalber will get the start for IPFW, while Adam Bray will get the nod for the Jackrabbits.
