Box Score – Game 2
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW baseball team is now 9-20 overall with a 1-2 mark in Summit League play after splitting a doubleheader against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday afternoon. SDSU won the first game 13-3, but the 'Dons bounced back to grab a 3-2 victory in game two.
South Dakota State exploded for 16 hits in game one, generating 13 runs. They posted four runs in the first, and four more in the sixth to take a commanding 8-1 lead after six innings. Each team scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Jackrabbits clinched the victory with three runs in the top of nine giving them a 13-3 win.
Aaron Machbitz hit very well in game one after not playing in the first game of the series. Machbitz went 4-for-6 from the plate in game one with two RBI. Zach Briggs also earned two RBI in game one, but it was Phil Paquette who led the team with three RBI off a 3-for-6 day. SDSU ended game one with 12 RBI.
Clay Hathaway, Shane Trevino and Caleb Fenimore each recorded two hits for the Mastodons. The team had nine total hits in the game.
Jason Kalber was hit with the loss on the mound for IPFW in game one. Kalber allowed eight earned runs off nine hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked four. Nate White was the first 'Don out of the bullpen for IPFW. White threw 3.1 innings while striking out two. The final Mastodon to take the hill was Cody O'Neal. O'Neal made his first pitching appearance of the season to end the game for IPFW.
Game two was much more low scoring then the first matchup. IPFW generated three runs off just two hits. Clay Hathaway led off the game with a triple and Malcolm White recorded the second hit which turned out to be his sixth double of the year.
Hathaway's second triple of the season was hit down the right field line. Daren Boss followed in the lineup and was walked to put runners on the corners. The Mastodons executed a double steal to score the first run of the game. Boss took off for second and as the throw was being made, Hathaway broke for home. Each runner was called safe as IPFW would take an early 1-0 lead.
IPFW pushed the lead to 3-0 after scoring two more runs off wild pitches. The Jackrabbits scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth, but Steve Danielak would slam the door on a comeback giving the 'Dons a 3-2 win and an overall split for Saturday.
Kyle Sorensen earned his first collegiate win on the mound for the Mastodons. Sorensen threw four innings and struck out three batters. Danielak threw the final three innings of the seven inning matchup for his fourth save of the season. Danielak fanned five batters in the final three innings to help the Mastodons secure the win.
