Box Score
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Carter DeBoe came up with a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning allowing IPFW to even their Summit League record at 2-2. The series split moves the IPFW overall record to 10-20.
Sunday's game was tied at 2-2 after nine innings of play. The Jackrabbits recorded two hits in the top of the tenth, but were unable to break the tie. A pitching change was made before the bottom of the tenth as Shane Kraemer entered the game from the South Dakota State bullpen.
Kraemer opened the door for IPFW with a leadoff walk of Caleb Fenimore. Head Coach Bobby Pierce put Jordan Hoeing in to pinch run for Fenimore with the game on the line. Lucas Salerno followed Fenimore in the lineup with a sacrifice bunt. The ball was misplayed by the third baseman for an error putting runners on first and second for IPFW.
The 'Dons continued to play small ball as Hathaway advanced the runners to third and second off a sacrifice bunt. SDSU elected to intentionally walk Daren Boss to get to Carter DeBoe. DeBoe delivered the game-winning hit with a single over the head of the right fielder giving IPFW the 3-2 comeback victory.
DeBoe ended the day with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate, including the game-winning RBI. Shane Trevino and Kristian Gayday also picked up an RBI in the win. Trevino sparked the comeback with an RBI triple in the seventh inning. He would come around to score off the Gayday single that split back up the middle of the field.
Another key play in the win over South Dakota State was the throw home from Malcolm White in the top of the eighth inning. After posting two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, the Jackrabbits answered with a great start to the eighth. Eric Cain drew a walk as the leadoff man and Phil Paquette moved Cain to second with a single to right field. Zach Rhodes laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners and the 'Dons decided to intentionally walk Andrew Phelan to load the bases for a double play opportunity.
Zach Briggs came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. He hit a fly ball to centerfield that looked to be a sacrifice fly. White changed the game by making the catch and throwing a perfect ball to the plate executing the double play after Fenimore tagged out Cain to keep the game tied.
Each team used three pitchers on the mound for Sunday's contest. Travis Reboulet made the start for IPFW. He threw six solid innings while striking out four batters. Drew Overman came in for 2.2 innings of work. Overman allowed one hit and struck out one. The win was credited to Steve Danielak. Danielak earned his third win of the season by throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Kolton Emery got the start for South Dakota State. Emery threw 3.1 innings, before an unfortunate accident took him out of the ballgame. Emery delivered a pitch in the fourth inning that was lined right back at the mound. The ball struck Emery in the head, forcing him to come out. Emery walked off under his own power and was replaced by Austin Busse. Busse threw the next 5.2 innings before Kraemer took the loss.
IPFW will return to action this week with a road game against Chicago State. The game will be played on Wednesday, April 11 at 4 p.m.
