Southern Illinois Finishes Strong to Defeat IPFW

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The IPFW baseball team took a 16-0 loss on Friday afternoon as Southern Illinois posted 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to record their 27th win of the year. With the loss, IPFW is now 16-39 overall with one game remaining on the 2012 schedule.
Kristian Gayday and Mike Mugg led IPFW offensively with two hits each as the Mastodons ended the game with eight total hits after only recording four in the first game of this three-game series. Clay Hathaway and Malcolm White each ended the game 1-for-3, while Shane Trevino and Markus Kalber rounded out the hit total by going 1-for-4.
SIU got great pitching out of their starter for the second straight day as Nathan Dorris threw seven full innings for the Salukis. The southpaw allowed six hits, but was able to strikeout nine without walking any batters. Tyler Dray and Lee Weld each threw one inning to complete the shutout of IPFW.
Southern Illinois scored two runs in the first, one in the third and fifth, two in the sixth and exploded for 10 in the eighth to give the SIU pitchers plenty of run support.
Jason Kalber kept IPFW within striking distance as the IPFW starter. The lefty threw six full innings and left the game with IPFW trailing 6-0. Kalber allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking five.
The IPFW bullpen struggled as Danny Tursell and Kevin Kimball gave up 10 runs combined in less than two innings of work. Tursell was hit with eight runs, although only three were earned and Kimball was unable to record an out as he surrendered three hits which allowed two runs to score while also walking two. Nate White finally got IPFW out of the bottom of the eighth inning with a strikeout.
IPFW is down to their last game of the season which will be played tomorrow at Abe Martin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. EST.
